Louise Slaughter

2006 Award Recipient
Sidney R. Yates Advocacy Award

One of the most powerful women in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congresswoman Louise Slaughter has achieved a significant level of leadership as the Ranking Member of the influential House Committee on Rules, making her the first woman from either political party to hold this position. During her 19 years in office, Rep. Slaughter has earned a reputation as a strong proponent of progressive causes and for her dedication to criminal justice, women's health, environmental and arts issues.

Congresswoman Slaughter has served since 1993 as the Democratic Chair of the Congressional Arts Caucus, where she has lead the effort for increases to the NEA's budget annually. A member of the House Democratic Leadership, she serves on the Democratic Steering & Policy Committee. Among her other efforts, Rep. Slaughter serves as the chair of the Future of American Media Caucus and the Bipartisan Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus and is former Co-Chair of the Congressional Women's Caucus.
