Congress Passes Bill Making Performing Arts Centers Eligible for FEMA Relief
Arts Presenters' members can celebrate victory to change federal disaster relief funding policy after a yearlong advocacy effort following hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Late in the day on Friday September 29, Congress approved a new Federal Emergency and Management Agency (FEMA) funding policy for performing arts centers in times of national disaster. The new language is part of the FY07 Department of Homeland Security Appropriations bill (H.R. 5441). The President is expected to sign the bill into law in the next few weeks.
The legislation comes at a time when Arts Presenters’ members, which include large and small theatres, performing arts centers, urban and rural arts groups, and artists have been devastated repeatedly by natural and manmade disasters. To increase the strength of our advocacy work for our members, Arts Presenters is a coalition partner of the American Arts Alliance (AAA), a coalition of American Symphony Orchestra League, Association of Performing Arts Presenters, Dance/USA, OPERA America and Theatre Communications Group. AAA is a national network of more than 4,000 members comprising the professional, nonprofit performing arts and presenting fields.
