Between 10 to 18 one-year project grants in amounts ranging from $20,000-$40,000 each will be awarded to ensemble theatre company collaborations with at least one theatre or arts presenter partner (see organization definitions).
Applicants may submit projects in any of the following stages: a beginning collaboration or exploratory phase, the
production stage of an established collaboration, or the touring stage of a completed project.
Project grants support:
- The creation or touring of new work proposed by an ensemble theatre company, in an established partnership with at least one presenting organization, ensemble theatre or resident theatre, or
- New, innovative approaches to re-envisioning an existing work proposed by an ensemble company in an established partnership with at least one presenting organization, ensemble theatre or resident theatre.
Funds may be used for:
- Artistic fees for the project
- Rehearsal salaries for the participating artists
- Production travel expenses
- Freight expenses related to the tour
How to Apply for a Grant
The deadline to apply for a project grant has passed. A peer panel will review the applications in October, 2007 and invite selected applicants to submit a full proposal by December, 2008. All applicants should set their e-mail spam filters to accept e-mails from TheatreProjects@artspresenters.org.
Project Grant Eligibility
- All ensemble theatres considered for project grant support must be either an independent 501(c) 3 organization or be represented by a fiscal agent or project collaborator who is an established nonprofit 501(c) 3 organization. International ensembles may apply if represented by a fiscal agent or collaborator that is a 501(c) 3 organization. (in which case the fiscal agent may apply as the Lead Applicant)
- Demonstrated organizational capacity to implement the projected activity. Arts Presenters will require:
- An audited financial statement no later than 18 months beyond the end of the organization's fiscal year or,
- A compilation and review with the most recent filing of the organization's IRS Form 990.
- Have a minimum of three years' prior operating history.
- Evidence of payments to professional artists.
- Evidence that creative ownership of the project is retained by the generative artists.
- The organization's financial "Statement of Activities" must indicate a balanced budget.
- Ensemble theatre companies from the United States or abroad working with a U.S.-based arts presenter partner and/or collaborating theatre partner (click here for definitions for ensemble theatre companies, theatre partner and arts presenter partner).

Project Grant Funding Restrictions
- Ensemble theatre companies that have been awarded support from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation/ Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Leading National Ensemble Theatres Program are not eligible to apply.
- Incomplete applications will be considered ineligible and will not be reviewed.
- Ensemble theatre companies with a strong choreographic component to their work can apply to both this grant program and to the National Dance Project for the same project, but can only receive funding from one of these programs.
Review Criteria
- Evidence of an established, equitable partnership between presenter, theatre partner and ensemble theatre with the scope and roles of the partnership clearly defined;
- Evidence of the artistic merit and quality of the project and its partners;
- Demonstrate creative ownership of the project retained by the ensemble theatre;
- A reasonable time estimate of creative time/commissioning fees to be paid to the artists independent of any performance fees for touring;
- A reasonable estimate of the degree to which each partner contributed expertise, physical space, finance of project/touring expenses and future presentations of work; and
- Evidence of a documentation and evaluation process for the project.
