“It is artistic and community ownership of creative processes and artistic products that distinguishes ensemble theater from other forms of organizing artistic assets….Some ensembles are rooted in the community…Other ensembles consciously stand apart from community in order to critique and provoke. All of us create theater that is meaningful to each member and to our diverse audiences.”
-The Network of Ensemble Theaters
The Ensemble Theatre Initiative was designed to fund collaborative projects between ensemble theatres, resident theatres and presenters to build the knowledge and capacity of the work of ensemble theatres and expand the reach of their work to audiences nationwide. The only program of its kind, the Initiative supports some of the most innovative projects through project grants, the Under the Radar festival and travel subsidies.
Travel Subsidy grants of up to $2,000 are available to theatre artistic directors, producers, presenters, managers and artists to see work by ensemble theatres that have initiated a dialogue with them about a long-term partnership or project. In addition, artistic, production, education, publicity or marketing staff at ensemble theatre companies are eligible for funds to visit a potential host theatre or arts presenter in order to effectively prepare for an engagement at least 6-12 months in advance. Funds are also available to artistic directors of regional theatres for travel to attend the Under the Radar Festival and Symposium scheduled for Arts Presenters’ Annual Conference in New York in January 2008.
